The announcements were made this morning at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The nominees were introduced by Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Aida Takla-O’Reilly along with notable actors Jessica Alba, Megan Fox and Ed Helms. The 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 13 hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

Pairing these announcements with last night's SAG nominees provides quite a bit more insight into what the atmosphere is this season. It's hard to get a full sense of the vibe just yet, as the total number of films and actors are ostensibly doubled with separate categories for both Drama and Comedy. Still though, we can see some names that have surprisingly repeated, and a few that continues to get left out. Again, I'll give some of my thoughts on the grouping after the categories.

What stands out to me most right off the bat is the five nominations for "Django Unchained". As expected, I've heard a lot of polarizing opinions on the film so far, and I'll be very curious to see if the film can culminate in anything more than a Supporting Actor nomination come Oscar time. This is a good start, and though it's facing incredibly stiff competition in the Drama categories, if it's able to come away with a win or two, it would be seen as a huge success and might mean that there's more support here than initially expected.
On the opposite end, again "Beasts of the Southern Wild" was completely shut out. I thought an acting nomination or two was in line, as well as my hope for a Best Original Score nomination. This was one of the surprise films of the year for me, and I'd really like to see it commended, even if it's only in nomination.
I was surprised to see "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" with three nominations, even as that was another pleasant surprise for me this year. As it's mostly foreign members of the press who vote on these awards though, it doesn't surprise me that this story resonated well with many of them. If this film translates at all to the Academy Awards I'll be quite surprised.
The acting awards seemed pretty expected, other than Nicole Kidman showing up again for her performance in "The Paperboy". Is this going to be a thing? I'm on board!
While it wasn't much of a surprise, it's still crazy for me to see that Walt Disney Pictures has three of the five nominations in the Best Animated Feature category. Even if there were only three nominations, you might expect these to be the top three this year. I'm still not very familiar with most of the animated films yet this year, but I'd say, in some form or another, Disney sweeps all of the animated categories this year.
Finally, I was happy to see Adele's theme song from "Skyfall" show up in the Best Original Song category. This hasn't been getting nearly the attention that I hoped it would get, so I'm glad to see it mentioned here. Without being familiar with most of the other nominees, it seems hard to bet against anything from "Les Miserables" right now. An upset here would really shake things up though.
Now that we have our first two major players in for this season, what are your thoughts? Any surprises that I didn't point out?
